18-year-old Yeng the rebel-rocker, stopped schooling in order to help out her parents. She sacrificed her own education in order to let her siblings continue with their own schooling. Never giving up on her music, Yeng used her time to continue to live out her passion and soon became the lead vocalist of a rock band. She has written a number of songs like, “Hawak-kamay” which is about a cousin whom she has developed a deep friendship with.
Yeng became the first Grand Star Dreamer of ABS-CBN's reality show Pinoy Dream Academy. She described her win, however, as simply fulfilling. “Ako pala ang panalo, yun ang naisip ko nung sinabi pangalan ko!” Yeng exclaimed. She described that her being named Grand Star Dreamer didn’t sink in immediately, and that she’s still bewildered with it today; but she’s slowly coming to terms with it, saying: “Di ko inaasahan na magbabago buhay ko.”
She drew inspiration from her dad (which she calls her ‘number one fan’) and recounts that the first thing she told him was “Dad, we made it.” And he, despite swelling up with pride (and tears) over his daughter’s win, mustered up enough wit to say: “Huwag ka umiyak dito (sa stage), baka masira ang makeup mo!” This is the reason why Yeng entered the Academy in the first place; after sacrificing her education for her siblings, she decided to ease the financial burden off her dad through music; and finally, during the Grand Dream Night, she was able to reach her goal.
Finally, while looking towards a very bright future ahead of her, she still wants to be known as she was during her stint in the Academy. “Gusto ko pa rin ma-remember bilang isang songwriter talaga,” she notes. She also adds that she still wants to be known as the ‘batang makulit’ she was in the Academy, who always joked around with her co-scholars in between classes, and got into a few scuffles as well; but was always loved by her companions. “Ginawan ako ni Davey ng kanta nung nanalo ako na sobrang ganda, para siyang tungkol kay Cinderella.” And for this eighteen-year-old’s transformation from aspiring artist to Grand Star Dreamer, hers is a real Cinderella story indeed.

With the recent sucess of her Salamat Album (which currently reached the double platinum mark), first solo concert and US tour, Yeng is set to prove why she's worthy of the title "ROCK PRINCESS."

RJ is an ECE graduate who's supposed to take his ECE Board Exams this November when he stumbled upon Pinoy Dream Academy. In spite of hoping that his son would be an engineer, RJ’s father is still very supportive of his son’s decision to enter the Academy. Though he is a good composer and singer, RJ knows that he cannot be the perfect performer because he has a big problem with dancing. His original composition “Miss Kita Pag Tuesday” was a hit in UST where he graduated.
I am lucky enough to be given the chance to ask RJ a few questions about himself:
1. Sino ang inspiration/ influence mo sa pagsulat nang kanta at pagpeperform? Why?
RJ: Influence ko in song writng si ely buendia ng
eraserheads, jason mraz, john mayer, jim paredes.
sa pagperform si jason mraz at francis m.
2. What age ka nagstart sumulat nang kanta? at
first song na nagawa mo?
RJ: Nagstart ako magsulat i think i was 20 yrs old. i was
really surprised nung naappreciate nyo mga songs ko
dahil di naman ako katagalan na na song writer...
although i wrote our graduation song nung high school
sa lourdes school of mandaluyong pero sa palagay ko
tsamba lang yun... hehe... officially the first song
that i wrote is "get close" and i intended that song
to be a theme song for close-up... then the second
song that i wrote is "miss kita pag tuesday"... hehe
kakaaliw no?
3. Ano yung na-feel mo nung first time mo narinig ang song mo sa radio? or ung first time mo pinerform ito sa harap nang tao?
RJ: Grabe, it's like a dream come true for me... kasi
tinanggihan na yan ng ibang radio stations eh... pati
ibang recording label... sobrang overwhelmed talaga
ako nung narinig ko sya sa radio. i used to perform
miss kita pag tuesday sa Youth for Christ at sa UST...
they do appreciate it pero after nun wala na din...
kaya sobrang thankful ako sa PDA....

The Stories Behind The Songs
Hawak Kamay
A consistent chart-buster since September 2006, Hawak Kamay was written by Yeng when she was 14 years old. Her brief separation from her cousin/best friend inspired her to compose this moving song (both music and words), which talks about Yeng’s assurance to her cousin that she will stand by her, no matter what.
Hawak Kamay is also the theme song of “Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo”, Judy Ann Santos’ and Ryan Agoncillo’s first movie team-up and Star Cinema’s entry to the 2006 Metro Manila Film Festival. Hawak Kamay also won best theme song during the festival’s awards night in December 2006.
Miss Kita Pag Tuesday
Another consistent chart-buster since it was first heard during the NCR Dreamer’s Night, RJ wrote “Miss Kita Pag Tuesday” when he was an engineering student at the University of Santo Tomas. His closeness to a female classmate of his, who was his seatmate on all schooldays, except Tuesday, inspired him to write the song. The song’s easy-listening melody and witty lyrics contributed to the success of this song. People like the song, because they relate to it, especially that part about coding, a term used to refer to the days when people are not allowed by law to drive their cars during a certain time of the day.
If We Fall In Love
Another heartwarming song that is consistently on the top 5 ranking on the charts since December 2006, was written by RJ and presented by Yeng to PDA Headmaster Jim Paredes during one of their songwriting classes in September 2006. RJ’s closeness to Yeng must have inspired him to compose this song. “If We Fall in Love”, is also the theme song of “The Princess Hours”, a Korean novella.
Awit ng Pangarap
This song, written by Yeng, is the official theme song of Pinoy Dream Academy. In September 2006, the scholars were divided into 3 groups, headed by Yeng, RJ and Yvan and were asked to write the official theme song. The winning song was announced by Headmaster Jim during PDA’s Halloween party.
It's All About Your Love
This song landed on the 19th spot on DWRR’s countdown on January 6, 2007. It is the theme song of a weekly teen show on ABS-CBN, titled "Abt Ur Luv". RJ wrote this song in 2005 while on the way to a school field trip in Laoag. The song’s version that is being played on TV is Taglish (“Tagalog-English”), while the radio version is all-English.
Ang Awitin
As a show of gratitude to the fans, who supported her all the way, Yeng wrote this inspiring song. Having garnered the highest number of text votes among 7 other songs written by the other scholars, this song also won for her the top prize in a songwriting contest inside PDA. “Ang Awitin” was also her final song after winning the Grand Star Dreamer title during the Grand Dream Night held on December 16, 2006.
